Certified Addiction Counselor

Get a Career in a Growing Market by becoming A Certified Addiction Counselor

In a world where the sum total of a person seems to be measured by the things we have, is it any wonder we have an almost unhealthy desire to chace what the world thinks?

This is where a certified addiction specialis or professional can really help. In a society filled with impulsive and addictive behavior driven by the insane desire to be satisfied and happy though purchases or position, addiction has been driven high among the population.

There has never been a better time to consider a career as a certified addiction counselor. As a certified addiction counselor, it will be your job to help people handle all kinds of different compulsive behaviors, from heroin to shopping.

The great thing is that this type of work doesn't need a formal office. You can meet in short term office space, public areas like in a library, or even the mall. The point is that to keep expenses down for you as an independant business person and your customers/patients, you don't need a lot of the usual entanglements of this profession.

It really doesn't matter that much what the problem is in particular, the fact is that there will be someone who is addicted to doing it over and over again, and can not stop without your help. The amount of good you can do in your job will give you pride in your work as a certified addiction counselor like few careers would give you.

Of course, beginning a career in certified addiction counseling is not as easy as all that. Many of us have a knack for reading people and give good advice, but it takes more than this to become a certified addiction counselor.

Not only do you have to role in a fully accredited professional program, but you also typically have to undergo some amount of supervised training before you are a fully accredited certified addiction counselor and able to go off and help people, but once you have all of the training that you need, the possibilities are almost endless.

For example, many certified addiction counselors work in the private sector, taking patients for one on one visits independent of any institution. This has many advantages over some of the other jobs that a certified addiction counselor can do. One of them is, obviously, that the pay is better than working for a hospital or residential treatment center. Another one is that you can have full control over the type of treatment you will administer as a certified addiction counselor working in private practice. You are not required to administer whatever twelve step program is currently in vogue at the institution at which you work, and can develop your own program specifically tutored to your patient. A professional in this field will find a growing need as our society continues to spin out of control

Of course, it is more typical for a certified addiction counselor to work in an institution. This allows them to work closely with other professionals, and to really make a difference in the lives of those who have fallen farthest through their addictions.

A certified addiction counselor in an institution works with people whose addictions are so severe that they have necessitated dropping out of society for a while to recuperate, and working with these people, there is just so much difference you can make!
